Simply put: This is my process for drilling a small hole in a gem or cabochon. The process is the same for any material except a diamond, which, lets be honest, you should not try to drill through unless you have a laser…. which I do not.

02:55 Starting to drill the stone
05:15 Speed up video of drilling

Tools you’ll need:
A diamond coated steel twist drill bit
A flex shaft or similar handpiece/drill
a shallow pan of water
a stone or two to practice on
patience
This process takes anywhere from a minute to 10 or more, depending on a lot of factors such as a stones hardness, the depth you are drilling and how much pressure you feel comfortable applying.
In this demo, I am drilling through turquoise, which is softer, but can be very prone to chipping or fracturing and so I am taking it very slow.
Other materials such as quartz, agate, jade and jasper are all much harder and tougher and can take a lot more pressure but may still drill slower due to their inherent hardness. Other softer materials such as opal, amber, fluorite etc… will drill much faster.
I use a slight up and down motion to help clear debris from the hole and also vary my speed to help the bit to bite into the stone. Experiment to find the speed that seems to cut the fastest.
